Every day we see more services and products being sold online, making our lives simpler and predicting our next purchase.
For many companies, having an e-commerce platform started as a luxury a few years ago, then became a necessity, and today, it's a priority. According to the Mexican Internet Association, since 2003, the value of e-commerce sales in Mexico has doubled approximately every two years, indicating exponential growth in digital sales.
Speaking with José Quinzaños, CEO of The Box Club, a fashion startup with over 4,000 customers that combines the personalized attention of a boutique with e-commerce, he gives us five tips for selling fashion online:
- 1.- Personalized attention: "Today, customers are more demanding than ever and seek an experience. That's why when you register with The Box Club, a stylist learns your tastes, sizes, and lifestyle to recommend several clothing items that they send to you in a box, with a flexible model where you can return what you don't like or doesn't fit, and only pay for the products you want to keep at the same price as in-store. No matter how much technology advances, customer demand for great customer service will never change."
- 2.- Customers want us to do everything for them: "We waste a lot of time shopping in person, something many men hate. Additionally, it's a trend today for brands to do everything for us by delivering services and products to our homes, remembering our preferences, and making our lives simpler. Every day we see more services and products being sold online, making our lives simpler and predicting our next purchase."
- 3.- Metrics are gold: "One of the great advantages of e-commerce is the amount of real-time data you can have about your customers. We measure everything, and metrics are our obsession. With e-commerce, obtaining metrics is cheap and straightforward compared to a traditional business, allowing for quick adjustments based on our customers' preferences."
- 4.- Conduct many experiments: "We constantly conduct experiments to measure what works and what doesn't, understanding our customers more each day and how we can provide them with a better experience. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos himself has stated that much of his success is based on the number of experiments they conduct."
- 5.- We're seeing the retail apocalypse: This year, it's forecasted that at least 3,500 retail stores will be closed in the United States, which will likely be a trend in our country in the coming years. "If you don't embrace the digital era, your business will likely disappear. In my previous business, I sold in a traditional manner, and to transition to digital sales, I've been educating myself, and my suppliers have helped me a lot. We need to recognize our strengths and weaknesses."
In Mexico, 59.5% of the population has internet access. However, according to Singularity University, it's expected that approximately 100% of the world's population will have internet access by 2022, exponentially growing the e-commerce opportunity in the coming years. Regardless of the industry, today e-commerce is not just a trend but a business priority.
