In the 21st century, it is necessary to consider younger people for top management positions in companies, where a winning combination between experience and digital youth can be achieved.
Let's be honest: there is currently a huge generational gap between someone who was born before computers and touched their first computer in adulthood (digital foreigners) and the youth who were born and already had a Nintendo or a computer since childhood (digital natives). This is the reason why today there are young people who are creating immense fortunes at very young ages. Here are some examples:
- Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook at the age of 20. At 28, his fortune is valued at 13.3 billion dollars.
- Elon Musk, considered the next Steve Jobs, sold his company Zip2 for 22 million dollars at the age of 28; at 31, after the sale of PayPal to eBay, he earned 150 million dollars.
- Steve Jobs at the age of 27, when Apple went public, became one of the richest young people in the world.
- Tony Hsieh, at the age of 26, sold his company Linked Exchange to Microsoft for 265 million dollars, at 36 he earned 240 million after the sale of Zappos to Amazon.
Among many other cases. The interesting thing is that the people who lead most of the largest companies today are "digital foreigners", that is, over 35 years old, in a world where technology is already a very important factor in any industry. Cristian Hauswaldt, Director of Private Banking at Actinver, tells us that: "The day Facebook went public, the company was worth approximately $91 billion when:
- Cemex was worth $6 billion
- BBVA worldwide was worth $36 billion
- Volkswagen worldwide was worth $70 billion."
Therefore, Dominic Barton, global CEO of McKinsey, believes that "it is extremely clear that technology is the new oil, so it is time for large companies, even if they are not technology companies, to have a subsidiary in Silicon Valley". It is important to understand that we are in the 21st century and that younger people should also be taken into account for top management positions in companies, and to have a winning combination between experience and digital youth.
